Riga Municipal Monument Agency ‘Rīgas pieminekļu aģentūra’ (‘the Agency’)
‘Brīvības pieminekļa un Rīgas Brāļu kapu pārvalde’ (the Authority of the Freedom Monument and the Riga Brethren Cemetery), a Riga City municipal non-profit company, was established in 1994, based on resolutions adopted by the Supreme Council, the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia, and the Riga City Council. The Agency is designed to provide for the care, maintenance and restoration of the most important national monuments: the Freedom Monument and the Riga Brethren Cemetery. From 1995 till 2004 the Authority carried out maintenance, research, project development, restoration and conservation works at the Riga Brethren Cemetery. In 2004 the Authority was reorganized by a resolution of the Riga City Council, and ‘Rīgas pieminekļu aģentūra’ (the Riga Municipal Monument Agency) was formed in its place.
The Agency is a publicly accessible municipal body, its principal task is to maintain and preserve the existing monuments* situated in the public outdoor space in Riga, i.e. to co-ordinate, plan, direct, and carry out activities related to keeping record, taking possession, maintenance, and restoration of monuments. The Freedom Monument (National Art Monument No.6965) and the Riga Brethren Cemetery (National Art Monument No. 6971, National Architectural Monument No. 6678) have been identified within the framework of the operation of the Agency as monuments of particular national and cultural importance.
The Agency is open to ideas and solutions of problems. The Agency has been co-operating with national and local government institutions, and non-governmental organizations and individuals alike. Ground have been prepared by the Agency for international co-operation with related field bodies in Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, Finland, Scotland, Italy etc.
The Agency has been established as a municipal institution, with prospects of growth and development, to carry out the tasks delegated to it according to its regulations. Its activities are organized in two directions:
Maintenance, restoration, historical research, improvement of memorials, such as the Riga Brethren Cemetery, and organisation of public events in these memorials;
Care for and restoration of monuments, art and environment objects, commemorative plates in the public outdoor space in Riga.
